The Best Indonesian Restaurant in Melbourne “Kedai Kampung”

Today we are going to review an Indonesian restaurant called “Kedai Kampung”. It is not uncommon to find Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne. However, this restaurant is surely different than other Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne because of its amazing and authentic flavor.

Kedai Kampung restaurant opens every weekday (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) from 11 am–9 pm. It is closed during the weekend. It is located in Springvale Plaza, Shop 12/792-806 Heatherton Rd, Springvale South VIC 3172. The space is not too big and it almost feels like a hidden gem.

In Kedai Kampung restaurant, you can find the most delicate flavor of Indonesian food. It offers us a lot of dish variety. All of the dishes that they serve are the typical food that you will find on the streets of Jakarta.

We were personally surprised to see the fried catfish menu. It was our first time seeing fried catfish being sold in an Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne. Because of that, of course, we had to try it. So we ordered fried catfish with Pucuk Harum tea for the beverage.

The fried catfish menu comes with rice, hot chili sauce, garlic crackers, and a slice of cucumber. The rice is a dry type of rice. Different from the rice you taste when you eat sushi. If you like the texture of non-sticky rice, then this rice would be perfect for you. The hot chili sauce is quite spicy but not too overpoweringly spicy. So you still can enjoy the dish without the chili being too spicy. The cucumber is fresh and crunchy. Even when you don’t like vegetables, it will not be a problem to eat just one slice of cucumber. The garlic crackers are crispy and tasty. It gives the dish variety of textures when you eat them together with the rice and catfish.

How about the catfish itself?

The catfish is, of course, the star of the dish. It has an authentic taste of Indonesian fried catfish. The restaurant already cut the head part so it is more hygienic and practical to eat. They cook it until it is crispy. So when you bite the fish, it has a bit of a crunchy texture.

Overall, the dish tastes good. We give a 9/10 rating for the fried catfish. When we have the chance, we will definitely come here again and try other food. We are curious to try the noodle next. How about you? What food do you want to try in Kedai Kampung?
